This is an interview with Essam Yassin Mohammed, senior researcher of the Shaping Sustainable Markets research group of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).

Mohammed reflects on his recent participation in the Antalya mid-term review of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA), and discusses what success for Least Developed Countries would look like.

He also talks about the challenges faced by LDCs, such as a frustrating lack of progress on means of implementation and technology transfer, and their issues of concern, such as a lack of diversification in LDC economies, particularly for those who rely heavily on commodity markets.

Finally, he remarks on the number and proliferation of goals and targets that LDCs must monitor and report on, and calls for the development community to start thinking about a more coherent approach to achieving the goals.

Mohammed, also a member of the Least Developed Countries Independent Expert Group, was interviewed at a dialogue event on 13 June 2016.

The event, entitled, 'Reimagining development in the LDCs: what role for the SDGs?', was organised by the LDC IEG, IIED and the ESRC's STEPS Centre.
