When Prophetess Naomi Silekunola Ogunseyi was connected to the tragic Christmas Fun Fair in Ibadan, Oyo State, many thought she would walk away, and the tragedy would be swept under the carpet because of her societal status. Shockingly, the government chose to make an example of the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, to the point where she spent Christmas in prison, separating her from her family and her only child. In a viral video, Naomi’s mother broke down in tears as she called on everyone to come to her aide, begging that they do something, anything at all, to ensure her daughter does not spend the new year in a prison packed with hardened criminals.
The story of how the Akure-based preacher got into trouble is nothing short of heartbreaking. In an attempt to put smiles on the faces of underprivileged children in Ibadan, the former Ife Queen organized a Christmas Party in Ibadan on December 18, 2024. The event was meant to accommodate 5,000 attendees but quickly attracted a much larger crowd after news spread that entry was free, and they stood a chance to win bountiful gifts and scholarships. While the event was supposed to start at 10 am, many people slept overnight at the Islamic High School, Bashorun venue, leading to a stampede that reportedly occurred between 5 am and 8 am. According to the police, 35 minors died in the stampede, while six others were critically injured.
Immediately, the 31-year-old Queen reported herself to the police, hoping to help with the investigation. But she was detained and then arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder and negligent acts causing harm. Oriyomi Hamzat, the owner of Agidigbo FM and the event's media partner, was equally arrested. Although the police had initially cleared the broadcaster, who fainted and was hospitalized after he heard the tragic news. The Judge ordered their remand at the Agodi Correctional Centre in Ibadan until January 13, 2025.
As expected, this heartbreaking development has caused a plethora of reactions, especially from the family of the former Queen, who are now alleging that her continued detention is politically motivated. What is Ooni of Ife doing about the issue?
