The End of an Era - The Alex Theatre St Kilda

There comes a time when every chapter, no matter how vibrant, must come to an end. It is with both gratitude and reflection that we announce the conclusion of the Alex Theatre Project at the close of 2024. A decade ago, this theatre was more than just a place; it was a dream built by the passion and vision of Susan and Aleksandar Vass OAM. A dream that has lived, breathed, and brought life to countless performances and stories.

For ten years, the Alex Theatre has been a beacon... a stage for the unheard, a home for the unseen. From humble beginnings, it rose to offer Melbourne something rare: spaces that embraced risk, art, and community. The walls of our three cherished venues have witnessed laughter, tears, and applause, nurturing creativity in all its forms. And while this chapter now draws to a close, what was created here will not be lost.

The Alex Theatre was never simply about a building; it was about possibilities. It was about discovering sustainable futures for small performing arts venues in a world that constantly shifts beneath our feet. Through challenges, none more significant than the pandemic, this theatre has been a constant. It stood resilient in the heart of Fitzroy Street, a light guiding performers, patrons, and dreamers alike. Together, we’ve enriched this city, made it more colourful, more alive.

As the curtain falls, we offer our deepest thanks to those who walked this journey with us. To our Patrons, artists, supporters, team members (Family) and community: your faith made the impossible possible. You have been the heartbeat of this theatre, and without you, none of this would have been imaginable.

But endings are never truly endings, not in the way we think. The Alex Theatre’s physical doors may close, but the spirit of what we built here will live on. Our charitable foundation will continue to support the arts throughout the City of Port Phillip. New initiatives in Port Melbourne and St Kilda will rise - new stages, new stories, new dreams.

So while we bid farewell to this place, we do so with the knowledge that what was created here will echo long after the final performance. This theatre has left its mark, not just in St Kilda, but in the hearts of all who stepped through its doors.
