US Education Secretary Linda McMahon sent a sharply worded three-page letter to Harvard University President Dr. Alan Garber, accusing Harvard of systemic failures including mishandling antisemitism, promoting race-based preferences, and violating federal law and ethical standards. She announced a freeze on new federal research grants to Harvard, declaring that the university should no longer seek such funding as none will be provided. McMahon criticized Harvard’s admissions, staff choices, and leadership, alleging the university had become a "mockery" of higher education and questioned the origins and motives of its students. She also referenced plagiarism scandals and controversial faculty hires.

However, the letter quickly went viral for its numerous grammatical errors, awkward phrasing, and misplaced capitalizations. Social media users mocked McMahon, calling the letter "illiterate" and questioning her competence as Education Secretary. An edited version of the letter with red ink corrections circulated widely, although Harvard did not officially release such a marked-up letter. Harvard responded by condemning the administration’s demands as improper attempts to control the university and vowed to continue defending academic freedom and combating antisemitism. The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and elite universities, with legal battles over free speech and government overreach ongoing.
