With your car insurance, you get a minimum of $5,000.00 to treat for your accident-related injuries. But medical treatment is expensive, right? $5000.00 won’t get you that much treatment, will it?

When the PA legislature drafted the motor vehicle code, it had costly medical expenses in mind when they wrote 75 Pa.C.S. 1797, which says medical providers can only charge 10% more than Medicare would pay for the same treatment.

By way of example, MRI‘s typically cost around $2,200.00. Medicare, however, pays only $250.00. 10% more than that would be $275.00. So that $2,200.00 MRI bill is reduced to $275.00. What happens to the rest of that bill? Written off!
