Occasionally, when throwing a Poké Ball to capture a wild Pokémon, different sounds can be heard (a louder "woosh" sound when the ball is thrown, and a metallic sound when the ball is about to capture the wild Pokémon). This phenomenon is actually a very interesting mechanic that has been implemented into Black and White versions called the "Critical Capture."

When a Critical Capture occurs, the Poké Ball will usually shake only once, instead of the normal three times, and in most cases, the wild Pokémon will immediately be captured. Very rarely does the Critical Capture fail to catch the wild Pokémon.

Although the exact probability of the Critical Capture happening is currently unknown, it seems to happen about as often as a Pokémon's regular move getting a critical hit ("regular" meaning a move that has no increased chances of getting a critical hit), which is about 6.25% of the time. A Critical Capture can happen when using any type of Poké Ball, at any time during the battle. They are especially helpful on rare and Legendary Pokémon that have low catch rates, and though the biggest chance for a Critical Capture to fail is on these types of Pokémon, it is still a very small possibility of failure.

Note: In my experience, Critical Captures seem to happen more often when the Poké Ball does not have as great of a catch rate, like a regular Poké Ball or a Great Ball, but this could simply be coincidence.
