THIS VIDEO: Ernst Haas was a serial innovator and propelled colour photography into a whole new creative realm - before people like William Eggleston or Stephen Shore came onto the scene. When I was starting out in photography, I would often see his work in photography magazines and always be impressed, but more on the level of - that is a very clever photograph. They were inspirational from the point of view that they motivated me to look for new ways to approach subjects. Edward Steichen was obviously impressed with how Haas had transformed colour photography into an expressive medium - not only did he include him in the Family of Man exhibition, but he also lined up a major show for him at MOMA. Steichen was the museum’s head of photography at the time. Before the show appeared, John Szarkowski took over as Director of Photography
