Описание к видео Beginner’s Guide to Foraging: California Huckleberry with Melina Lydia

Join forager Melina Lydia as she explores a local hiking trail in Santa Cruz, California, identifying the California huckleberry. Melina recently graduated from UCSC with a degree in plant science and literature and is just beginning her foraging journey. In this video, she discusses the distinction between American nightshade and huckleberries, helping you identify which plants are safe to forage.

She also shows how to spot a California huckleberry bush by its alternate, serrated, oval leaves and small, round berries that turn a deep purple when ripe. Melina also covers the traditional and practical uses of huckleberries, including their culinary uses and medicinal properties in Indigenous traditions.

This video was created as part of the USDA Indigenous Food Sovereignty Initiative, in collaboration with NĀTIFS, to support Indigenous-led education on responsible foraging and food sovereignty.

Ready to expand your foraging skills and learn about the versatile huckleberry? Watch now and discover how to identify and use this wild treasure!
