Описание к видео Katie Williams-Architecture and Labor Organization at Betatakin and Keet Seel, Northeast Arizona

This talk presents some of my dissertation work, which focused on the organization of architectural labor at Betatakin (Talastima) and Keet Seel (Kawestima) during the Tsegi Phase (AD 1250-1300). The goal of my dissertation was to identify whether people worked together as households, suprahouseholds, or communities, or whether specialists were brought in to build. I documented variability in architectural attributes across rooms within individual houses, linked that variability to builder choices, and identified architectural products associated with discrete production groups. Builders who work together share their decisions to the extent that their output is distinct from others’. This project expands on traditional archaeological assessments of architecture by focusing on earthen architectural materials, such as mortars, plasters, and daub.

Speaker Katie Williams (B.S., Chemical Engineering, Colorado School of Mines; M.A., Anthropology, University of New Mexico; Ph.D., Anthropology, University of New Mexico) is a postdoctoral geospatial scholar at Crow Canyon. Born and raised in Albuquerque, NM, Katie is also an enrolled member of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. Her dissertation research focused on examining the organization of architectural labor at alcove communities in Northeastern Arizona, but she has also worked in other parts of the U.S. Southwest. Currently, Katie is a postdoctoral scholar in geospatial archaeology at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. Her research and field experience to date have combined her interests in heritage conservation, materials science, labor organization, community construction practices, community distribution across the landscape, and earthen architectural materials.
