The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to change the way we do things. A recent poll said the 40% of people intend to walk more than before the pandemic started while 32% said they will work more from home. A similar proportion said they would shop locally, while 28% would cycle more. When it comes to a return to commuting following the easing of lockdown, the AA tells us that a fifth of motorists want to drive less. As lockdown eases, we ask the Active Travel Commissioner for the Sheffield City Region Dame Sarah Storey and Programme Director Pete Zanzottera to tell us what is meant by Active Travel and to describe their ambitious plans for the future. Dr Maxine Gregory tells us about her recent research into active travel, how this links to Sheffield’s claim as an outdoor city, and how we can ensure that active travel schemes work for everybody. We ask our panel whether active travel can really help us realise our new normal once lockdown ends or whether it will be just business as usual.

Host: Professor Steve Haake

Speakers

Dame Sarah Storey

Dame Sarah Storey has been Sheffield City Regions Active Travel Commissioner since April 2019, working to establish the strategy that will deliver Mayor Dan Jarvis' manifesto for the region to become a place where the natural choice for short journeys is on foot or by bike, or as part of a longer journey using public transport. Sarah works across a variety of stakeholders to share her ethos and help to develop plans, including Local Authority partners, key employers and education establishments, as well as ensuring the work delivered is based on her four pledges. Active Travel infrastructure must enable not just encourage; the standards of infrastructure must be sufficient to make people feel safe; it must be accessible for all regardless of the type of bike or access need a person may have and the plans must be led by the needs of the communities.

Pete Zanzottera

Pete is the Active Travel Programme Director for Sheffield City Region MCA, reporting to the Commissioner Dame Sarah Storey. He attempts to walk the talk, run, and cycle for nearly all his trips, combining with public transport when it’s a bit too far. He’s worked in sustainable travel for the last 30 years, making him one of the last people you should listen to.

Maxine Gregory

Maxine has worked within SHU as an expert in the monitoring and evaluation of programmes and interventions for almost 20 years. She supported a review of active travel in the SCR in 2019 and has led the evaluation of many cycling and walking projects. Maxine wrote the 2015 report which evidenced the economic contribution of Sheffield's outdoor sector; this provided the foundations to launch the 'Outdoor City' brand. Maxine is an expert advisor on the DfT's Future Transport Zones project which focuses on how innovation can shape future mobility options. Along with a team from SHU, UoS and Mosodi, supported by leading sector experts, she has just completed the development of an M&E Plan for active travel in the region. Maxine is passionate about running, walking and cycling but has no gold medals to show for her enthusiasm 😉.
