(27 Sep 2014) Residents of Amal Alamuddin's hometown in Lebanon on Saturday congratulated the human rights lawyer ahead of her wedding to actor George Clooney in Italy.
Alamuddin left Lebanon during the 1975-1990 civil war, but some of her relatives still live in the village of Baakline, her hometown.
Many villagers welcomed the wedding to Clooney, feeling proud to see one of their own in the spotlight.
"This is something we are proud of because Baakline has become international, and may God make everyone successful," one shopkeeper said.
Local bookshop owner Hussam Al Massri congratulated Alamuddin, saying: "she is one of our villagers. I feel happy for her."
The Baakline family home stood empty on Saturday with locals saying Alamuddin's cousins had left the village on Friday.
Celebrity guests meanwhile continued to arrive in Venice on Saturday for the star-studded wedding.
U2 frontman Bono signed autographs for fans and waved to photographers as he caught a water taxi to the Cipriani Hotel with his wife.
Less than five months after their engagement was announced, Clooney and Alamuddin are marrying this weekend in one of the world's most romantic settings.
On Saturday morning, workers at the Aman Hotel, where Alamuddin is staying, were busy constructing an overhead passageway to cover guests arriving on boats for a party expected on Saturday evening.
