The San Domingo Wash area, located near Morristown and Wickenburg in Arizona, is one of the most historically significant and popular regions for placer gold prospecting in Maricopa County. Gold was initially discovered here as early as the 1870s, leading to the creation of mining camps like Old and New San Domingo. The gold found in this district is typically angular, fairly coarse, and has a high fineness (purity). This placer gold was eroded and washed down from small gold-bearing quartz veins in the surrounding Wickenburg Mountains, concentrating in the wash gravels, particularly in and near the bedrock. While the richest, easily-accessible gravels were largely worked out by the 1880s, the area has seen continuous small-scale activity, primarily through drywashing and metal detecting, as water for traditional panning and sluicing is scarce except immediately after heavy rains.

For the modern recreational prospector, access and land status are the most critical factors. The San Domingo placers occupy a broad belt along the wash and its tributaries, and the land ownership can be a mosaic of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, Arizona State Trust Land, and private property, including active mining claims. Recreational gold panning and the use of metal detectors for gold nuggets are generally allowed on open BLM lands; however, prospecting is strictly prohibited on State Trust Land without a recreational permit and is forbidden on active, private mining claims. Many gold prospecting clubs, such as the Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA), maintain leased claims in the San Domingo Wash area, which provide their members with legal, pre-vetted spots to prospect with minimal equipment. Therefore, checking a claim map and being certain of land ownership before digging is essential to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
