Today we’re checking out the latest addition to the Benson Amps pedal lineup, the Germanium Preamp. The original Preamp is one of my all time favorite drive pedals, so very exciting to see a fresh take on it with this Germanium version.

After getting lots of feedback that customers were loving the combination of the Benson Preamp with their Germanium Boost, Benson started playing with the idea of combining the two circuits to to deliver a pedal that has the amp like tones and response of the Preamp pedal with the feel and character that the germanium boost imparts.

The Germanium Preamp sees the first JFET Transistor of the Preamp Circuit replaced with the Germanium gain stage from the boost pedal. Overall, there is a little less gain in this germanium version, but it has a softer/spongier feel. I find it works better than the standard version does if you’re running it into a cleaner amp.

Control layout is the same as the original Preamp. Volume & Drive controls set the overall output and amount of gain. There is less overall gain on tap, but it’s still more than capable of getting into that fuzzy drive territory. The Treble and Bass controls are highly interacting and let you dial in a wide range of sounds.
