Join me on the summit of Lucifer Peak, a 7,474-foot peak in the Sky Lakes Wilderness in southern Oregon, in September 2018. This rugged rock required a steep off-trail scramble to summit, accessed via the Pacific Crest Trail. At the top, I was rewarded with, as always, ants-- and an amazingly broad view, taking in Mount Thielsen and Crater Lake/Mount Mazama to the north, Klamath Lake to the southeast, the Rogue Valley to the southwest, and to the south, Mount McLoughlin and even Mount Shasta on this decently clear day. In the immediate area you can see the Seven Lakes Basin including Alta Lake perched on Violet Hill, along with the peaks of: Venus, Jupiter, Devils, Lee, and to the south, Shale Butte, Luther Mountain, and Pelican Butte.

Quite a peak list, and most any peak within the area of the Sky Lakes Wilderness' Seven Lakes Basin will offer you views of the listed peaks. One last tip: if you choose to challenge Lucifer and win, you'll be rewarded with a secret summit bivouac spot, perfect for one person overnight (or a close couple). Be safe out there and enjoy!
