Two British Generals Captured Because Their Driver Took a Wrong Turn During the chaotic retreat before Tobruk, Lieutenant General Philip Neame and General Richard O'Connor—two of Britain's most experienced desert commanders—were captured when their driver took a wrong turn in the dark and ran straight into a German advance guard. This catastrophic intelligence loss revealed the utter disorganization of British forces. O'Connor had been the architect of Britain's earlier victories against the Italians.
