Really enjoying working with the AEB-L steel. Grinds beautifully, not so prone to rust when compared to carbon steels, it's also tougher and has slightly better edge retention compared to most carbon steels. What's not to like.
The only negative is the heat treatment is just a bit more involved.
I austenetize the blades at 1060 Celcius for 15 minutes then plate quench using lots of pressure (4 heavy G Clamps screwed down hard). The blades come out immaculately flat, I have found without good pressure on the plates the blanks can warp!
Then straight from the plates into the dry ice slurry for an hour.
Two tempers @ 2hrs each at 170 Celcius results in final hardness of 60.5 to 61 Hrc.
