Webinar on “No to Bt Cotton: Protect agriculture and protect our farmers”
UBINIG, Nayakrishi Andolon, and Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) organized the webinar on July 24, 2022 with Dr. Vandana Shiva, Scholar and Environmental activist, Founder of Navdanya and Research Foundation for Science, Technology & Ecology, India as the keynote speaker. Dr. Tushar Chakraborty, Molecular Biologist, writer and Social Activist, West Bengal India spoke in the webinar (in Bangla) on Bt Brinjal and Bt Cotton. The program was moderated by Farida Akhter, Executive Director, UBINIG. Among the participants, there were environment activist, human rights activists, and journalists from different districts of Bangladesh, and from India, Nepal, Bhutan, Philippines, and Thailand.
It was held in the context of the concern at the news that the Bangladesh National Technical Committee on Crop Biotechnology (BNTCCB) of the Ministry of Agriculture has given go-ahead green signal for two Bt cotton varieties for final approval for field cultivation from the National Committee on Biosafety of the Ministry of Environment.
The introduction of GMOs is considered generally alarming for Bangladesh and also for climatic and agro-ecological characteristics that could be detrimental to agriculture in general. There are also biosafety and regulatory issues that require serious public debates and deliberations. The introduction of Bt brinjal, a genetically modified food crop in Bangladesh has already failed at the farmers field and the biosafety issues are violated.
