Narration: Shobha lived with her father, Ashok, in a small village called Ramgarh. When she was just 10 years old, her mother left her due to illness. Her father owns a small farm from which he earns his living and saves some for his daughter's future. Father Ashok was plowing the field.
Ashok 50: Hardworking / I just want to make a profit this time so that I can save some money. Whenever I farm, we farmers suffer huge losses. These rich people don't pay us much, but later on, our produce is sold for five times the price.
Shobha 25: Father, I'm here now. You rest. I'll do the rest of the work, and you eat.
Ashok 50: No, daughter, I'm working. You eat. I know you don't eat without feeding me.
Shobha 25: Angry / Father, why don't you ever listen to me? If your mother were here today, she would scold you. Come and eat, then I'll eat.
Ashok 50: Oh, you're exactly like your mother. I don't miss her so much after she's gone because you scold me like her, cook and feed me, and take care of me.
Shobha 25: Tearing eyes/ Dad, after mother's departure, you're my world, so I have to take good care of you, otherwise, who will I depend on to survive?
Ashok 50: Tearing eyes/ Come on, come on, every time I see you, you make me emotional and bring tears to my eyes. Hehehe/ Come, eat.
Narration: The daughter washes her father's hands with water from a pot, then the father and daughter sit under a tree and eat. After eating, Shobha plows the field. When her father falls asleep, she fans him with a cloth. But suddenly, the sound of cawing wakes Ashok.
Ashok 50: Oh my God, I've fallen asleep, and what are you doing to me? Go home, it's sunny. I work.
Shobha 25: Father, there's no need for this. I finished all the remaining work while you were asleep. The soil is soft and fine enough for sowing the seeds.
Ashok 50: Oh my God, you never listen to me; you do all the work yourself, being the smart one.
Shobha 25: That's me, Father. Now that the work is done, you come home with me.
Narration: Then both father and daughter reach home. Three or four months pass like this. Father and daughter work together in the fields, and then their green vegetables grow, which they then sell. Similarly, in the month of Kartik, all the women buy Karva and other items for married women to celebrate Karva Chauth. Seeing this, strange thoughts run through Shobha's mind.
Shobha 25: What kind of festival is this for which such a market has been set up? This festival is going on, right? I'll see how everyone celebrates it.
Narration: The next day, Shobha approaches the village women who are sitting in a circle listening to the Karva Chauth story…they have henna on their hands and finish the song.
Radha 35: Before I begin the story, I'll tell you...it's believed that on Karva Chauth, a woman who observes the Karva Mata fast with a true heart for her husband's long life receives this good fortune through the blessings of the mother. Friends, after the Karva Chauth story, we will all offer water to the Sun God.
Chandni 35: Okay, everyone, sit down with a one rupee coin in your hand and listen to the story with your fists closed. Hey Shobha, what are you doing here? Your name is Shobha, but it's indecent?
Sunita 35: Scolding/ Oh yes, what are you doing? It's such a sacred festival among us married women, and you've come and stood here, you unfortunate orphan.
Chandni 35: Look, she's grown so much, but her father hasn't married her yet. It seems she's not destined for a husband, so his shadow shouldn't fall on her this Karva Chauth either...
Radha 35: Scolding/ That's what Shobha said, "Go away from here, let us worship."
Narration: Hearing this, tears well up in Shobha's eyes. She quietly walks away and sits on the edge of the field, crying.
Shobha: Isn't all this really in my destiny? Will anyone ever consider me their own? Will I ever be able to keep the Karva Chauth fast for my husband? I have no one to explain it to me, and I'm not even married.
Narration: Shobha somehow manages to calm herself down and reaches home, but when Ashok asks her in front of her father, she breaks down in tears.
Ashok 50: Troubled/ Shobha, daughter, you won't tell your father, tell me what's the matter?
