Training launch of Agni-1

On 1st June 2023, India carried out successful training launch of Medium-Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-1 from APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha. The missile is capable of striking targets with a very high degree of precision. The training launch successfully validated all operational & technical parameters of the missile.

Agni-I is a medium-range ballistic missile that was developed by DRDO as apart of Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. It is a single-stage missile that was developed after the Kargil War to fill the gap between the 250 km range of the Prithvi-II missile & the 2,500 km range of the Agni-II. The missile has range between 700–1,200 km. The missile weighs 12,000kg and can carry conventional and nuclear warhead weighing between 1,000-2,500kg. The missile has flight ceiling of 370km and maximum speed of 9000 kmph. The missile can be launched from 8 x 8 Tatra transporter erector launcher or rail mobile launcher.

DRDO is now developing an upgraded two stage variant called Agni-1P by borrowing the newer technologies from Agni-IV and Agni-V platform to increase accuracy and reliability.
