DYA717 Japan Sake Tours Nagano Day 1 Nov 7, 2022
6:30 a.m. breakfast at the Buena Vista Hotel. The advance group met in the lobby, boarded the bus, headed for the train station to pick up the rest of the group. The Sake tour officially started today at 11:00-ish a.m. I met the whole group of 14 plus 2 Sake Tours leaders, Etsuko and Jason. There are 2 from Australia, 3 from Singapore and 9 from various states in the US.
We headed north to Kita Azumi Gun. Made a brief stop at Daio Wasabi Farm to explore the wasabi fields. I had a wasabi beer. Then we drove up to a farm and were introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Sadamitsu, who moved to Nagano from Osaka years ago to start their farm, Omusubi-Nouen. We were treated to their newly harvested rice and miso soup at their residence right next to their rice fields growing their special branded Kame-no-o rice. They had 2 different kinds of rice cooking over fire in old style kama pot. One was a type of famous Niigata rice and the other was a softer mochi rice. They said the Niigata rice farmed in Nagao was sweeter. They served their rice and tasted a small first serving of it plain. Etsuko had bought fresh wasabi at the last site and so grated some and we added it to our 2nd serving of rice with katsu bushi and some NO-RI. We also had it with specially made miso soup. Also had fresh NA-SHI (pear) and apples. ONO, ONO, ONO.
Visited Fukugen Brewery run by the Hirabayashi for centuries. The 18th generation brewer, Ms. Seiko Hirabayashi leads her family business and is a liaison for the Italian fashion industry.
Seiko san was our host today. We didn’t get to see any sake brewing operation; just an introduction to the brewery, looked around the idle brewing equipment and vats and then visited ttheir tasting room and shop. But the tasting was a fashion plate fancy tasting event. I thought they had set up dinner for us in the tasting room. They had the table fancily set with cheese, fresh persimmon, and other snacks and they explained which sake goes best with what. Soooo fancy! Seiko-san was featured in the big NTT DoCoMo telephone company’s magazine because of their excellence. Being and old and small brewery, they produce limited sake and some of their award winners doesn’t come with any fancy label or any box and yet sells well.

Got back to Hotel Buena Vista at around 5:45. Met again at 6:45 p.m. for dinner at Fukazake Restaurant. A bunch of us walked (about 15-20min) while the rest took cabs. Lots of sake.
