Hey everyone! Here is my piano medley of me playing tiktok songs that are stuck in my head.

The day after I had finished a demanding school project, I spent the day recovering and relaxing, however found myself in a very creative mood. In the process of playing around on the bit and practicing improvisation, I ended up learning 9 different tiktok songs on the piano (as one does). Much like many others, I’ve recently gotten addicted to watching tiktok videos, and one of the major appeals of tiktok (for me at least) is the super DUPER catchy songs. So of course I had to make a piano medley!

This medley is one of the creations I’m the most proud of on this channel, hands down. Bettering my musicality, original material in covers, and improvisation skills have been a work in progress for me, and this cover really helped improve all three of those, all while being super fun for me to make. Just before I made this cover, I was inspired by Tony Ann’s piano covers (which I discovered on tiktok, naturally) and was blown away by his level of musicality in his piano covers. Right away, I was able to put into perspective how much I still have to grow in terms of expression, articulation, phrasing, etc. So, one of my focuses for this cover was musicality! For example, especially when covering songs that a lot of people know, it’s important to nail the articulation so the piano sounds like the actual words. For instance, the lyrics “promise you I’ll change your mind” in Change Ya Mind - Haiti Babii has very particular accents on “pro-”, “you”, “change”, and “mind”, so I tried my best to convey that through piano.

The part I’m most proud of in this cover is the conclusion (is that the right musical term??? I have no idea), where I do a rapid fire reprise of several songs throughout the cover and also sprinkle in licks from Delfino Plaza but progressively bass boost and The Office Theme Song. By the way… I didn’t exactly plan for that part to sound like The Office Theme Song as that part was improvised, but I added it to the list retroactively!

Moreover, while I still have a lot of room to grow, I think I improved a lot with connecting songs together in a medley. This is the second official medley that I’ve made for my channel, the first being Memoranda Medley #1: Yumetourou, Shelter, Unravel (WATCH HERE:    • Memoranda Medley #1: Yumetourou, Shelter, ...  ). However, this tiktok medley was a bit more challenging because even though the individual songs were of easier level, I cycle through the songs at a faster pace (with less time for each song). Luckily, with westernized music, I could fit most of them to one similar chord progression, which made things a lot easier for me. However, it was a really valuable experience for me to have to think through what is the best way to connect the songs in a way that sounds nice. Lots of room to improve, of course.
