The chicks have been growing rapidly since the last series highlights installment, and now we get watch the rest of the story finish in condensed form. This final installment features lots of nest activity, mother bird enjoying some free worm handouts, and the chicks packing their bags and hitting the road...
Things had been fairly routine until May 9. The chicks were big and barely fit in the nest! They were very active, exercising their wings and hopping all around. Crows began to visit the area more frequently, and a local cat was patrolling below the nest as well, possibly attracted by all the activity.
At dusk on the evening of May 10, one chick did something unexpected - still unable to fly, it left the nest, fluttered to the ground, and started hopping towards a new location about 200 feet away. This appeared to be encouraged by the parents, who lead the little bird with soft calls. After an epic journey through dense ground cover and difficult terrain, the little bird made it to safety in a Pine tree. Shortly afterwards and as light was fading fast, the second chick followed suit. It started out in the right direction but changed course and headed towards the yard where the local cat lives! The parent birds were nowhere to be seen, so I quickly (and easily) captured the tame little bird, and carried it over to join its sibling in the pine tree, where they both stayed for the night.
In the morning, the parents re-appeared, and resumed moving the chicks to the final destination, where several days later they were still happily exploring the new location with more space and better cover than the nest site provided. ...and thus ends our story, with the chicks moving out to explore their new world!
The entire series was filmed with a GoPro Hero3+ Black, Canon HF100, and Canon 5D Mk2 from 3-31-2015 to 5-15-2015, resulting in over 1500 video clips and thousands of photos.
