Ricardo Tanturi was born as the son of Italian immigrants in the barrio of Barracas, Buenos Aires, in 1905. He learned to play the piano and violin. But he also went to medical school and graduated as a dentist. This didn’t stop him however from forming his own tango orchestra: in 1933 he started a sexteto: ‘Los Indios’, which later became an orquesta típica.

The orchestra of Ricardo Tanturi is one of the rhythmical orchestras, much like d’Arienzo, playing a very straightforward kind of tango. Perhaps not the most sophisticated of tango orchestras, but very suitable for dancing. In 1937 Tanturi made his first recording, the tango ‘Tierrita’. In 1939 Alberto Castillo joined the orchestra as a singer. The first recording by Tanturi and Castillo would be in 1941.

Alberto de Lucca, better known by his stage name as Alberto Castillo, was born in Buenos Aires in 1914. Just like Tanturi, he was a son of Italian immigrants and he studied medicine when he was introduced to Tanturi. He received his medical degree as a gynaecologist in 1942. Alberto Castillo was not just a good singer, he was also a showman, and very popular with the female audience. His voice can be recognized immediately, by his typical nasal sound (which added to his street credibility), but Castillo can also be very tender in his way of singing.

Tanturi and Castillo worked together until 1943. Then Castillo started a very successful solo carreer.

The tanda of this week is a waltz tanda – with three waltzes.

The first one is ‘Recuerdo’, recorded in 1941. Music & lyrics written by Alfredo Ángel Pelaia. Castillo recorded this waltz three times as a singer. In 1941, 1944 and 1974. But this version of Recuerdo with Tanturi is the one I like best.

Next is ‘Con los amigos’, aka ‘A mi madre’, recorded in 1943. Music written by José Razzano and Carlos Gardel, lyrics by Sebastián Alfredo Robles. ‘Con los amigos’ is about a young man spending all his money on partying with his friends, without any concern for his mother. But when the party is over, the money run out, and he’s seriously ill and about to die, all his so-called friends have run away and abandoned him. Not his mother, she’s the only one still there for him. As happy as the music sounds, it’s quite a tear jerker.

The final waltz of the tanda is ‘La serenata’, also known as ‘Mi amor’, recorded in 1941. Music written by Vicente Salerno, lyrics by Samuel Aguayo. A heartfelt serenade, but not as sweet as you might think, as Castillo sings how much he had loved her, but she killed his dreams with her betrayal.
