In 1985, Wilma Mankiller made history as the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, stepping into leadership at a time when her people felt profoundly marginalized by the U.S. government. Drawing on her experiences with the Black Panthers and the Alcatraz occupation movement in San Francisco, she returned to her community with a fierce dedication to justice and empowerment. Over the next decade, Mankiller transformed the Cherokee Nation into a model of economic and cultural resilience, navigating personal hardships and political challenges with remarkable poise. Through archival footage and interviews with activists and Mankiller herself, this film chronicles the rise of a visionary leader whose courage and determination reshaped her people’s future.
