The Petrushka Project is an unprecedented international live concert and commissioning initiative presented by Schott Music, boasting premieres of 75 solo piano pieces by a wide range of composers around the world. The Project affords a rare and unique opportunity for the infusion of a huge variety of new piano works into the international repertoire. Composers from 26 countries took part in Petrushka Project 2012, and the Project will be continued in the coming years.

"This 'two-step crab dance" for piano written from one Cancerian to another (PHS *14.7./PMH *15.7.) is entitled 'Two steps forward -- one step backwards' and is based on my old song from 1966 to a text by my father: 'Two steps forward -- one step backwards -- that is how the world goes round...'. The ostinato in an uneven rhythm is a reference to the then popular 'Take five'." (Peter Michael Hamel, February 2012)
