Bracing members are usually bolted to a gusset plate welded to the supporting element. A rule of thumb for gusset plate thickness is to be at least equal to the thickness of the member connecting to it. Various steel profiles can be used as bracing members from angles, flats, channels, I sections, hollow sections, etc. They are only loaded with axial load, most of the time, are designed to work in tension only.

Tip: A good practice is always to try to connect them centrally to the supporting element. Still, sometimes it is more convenient to put them with a bit of eccentricity to create a more compact joint and check locally for the effects of the micro-moment created.
