The Sun doesn’t burn like a campfire—it runs on nuclear fusion. Deep in its core, hydrogen atoms are crushed together to form helium, releasing a huge amount of energy every second. This energy gives us sunlight, warmth, and life.

But this fuel is limited. The Sun is about 4.6 billion years old and has enough hydrogen to last roughly 10 billion years total. That means it’s already past the halfway mark. When the hydrogen begins to run out, fusion will slow down, and gravity will take over. The core will shrink and heat up, while the outer layers will expand—turning the sun into a red giant.

In this swollen state, it could engulf Mercury, Venus, and maybe even Earth. Its surface will cool slightly and glow red, but its sheer size will make it more dangerous. After this unstable phase, the Sun will shed its outer layers, forming a glowing shell of gas called a planetary nebula. What remains at the centre will be a small, super-dense white dwarf—about the size of Earth but with half the Sun’s mass packed inside. Over trillions of years, even that will cool and fade into a cold, dark black dwarf.

Earth won’t survive that long. Even a small increase in the sun’s brightness will heat the planet so much that oceans will boil away, the atmosphere will disappear, and all life will vanish. If humans are still around, we’ll have to find a new home—maybe around a different star.

We still have about a billion years before things start to go wrong. But it’s a reminder that even something as mighty as the sun has a timer. We’re living in a rare, peaceful window of time where the sun shines just right for life to exist.
