But now, steps like a border patrolling agreement, easing of visa restrictions, approval of Indian pilgrimages to Tibet, and the resumption of direct flights point to cautious normalisation. The backdrop is important: U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent 50% tariff on Indian goods has rattled New Delhi. By engaging Beijing, Modi signals India will not be tied to any one camp and will pursue strategic autonomy. Yet, challenges remain: the $99.2 billion trade deficit, fears over China’s Brahmaputra dam, Beijing’s support for Pakistan, and memories of Doklam and Galwan. So, is this reset real progress or just optics?
