Keables Scholar Community Night, featuring Dr. Imani Perry and Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley, was held on Tuesday, March 12, in Seto Hall on the ‘Iolani School campus. The theme for the evening was "What's Going On: Ideas and Freedom in the Classroom.”

Dr. Imani Perry is Professor of Studies of Women, Gender and Sexuality and of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Her scholarship has explored a wide range of topics--hip hop, parenthood, and inequality. She has written a biography of playwright and activist Lorraine Hansberry. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Perry's latest book, South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation, won the National Book Award. Dr. Perry has also been selected as a 2023 MacArthur Fellow.

Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley is Professor of History at UCLA. Dr. Kelley research interests also range widely. His Hammer and Hoe: Alabama Communists During the Great Depression is a pathbreaking and indispensable study of the Black working class. His prize winning biography of pianist and composer Thelonius Monk is a compelling portrait of one of the most important and original American artists of the 20th century.
