I’m excited to come back to one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. In it we breakdown songs, albums or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career and gave them the momentum to rocket to long term success. On previous episodes we have covered Alive by Pearl Jam Band, Do You Believe in Love by Huey Lewis and the News, and Name by The Goo Goo Dolls. Today we are crossing over the into the world of dreams with Queensryche’s soul-soothing Silent Lucidity.

Queensryche’s history formally dates back to the early 80s, when vocalist Geoff Tate and guitarists Michael Wilton and Chris DeGarmo paths crisscrossed at various gigs in the Seattle area. It was in 1981, during a three-band act at a roller rink in Bellevue, Washington that things started to click. Wilton, DeGarmo and the rest of their band, called The Mob, needed a lead singer…

They had just lost theirs. Tate happened to be singing lead for that night for another band called Babylon. So, the guys from The Mob asked him if he’d be willing to front both. Geoff agreed. And he killed it, mesmerizing the audience with both his performances.

A while later, The Mob changed their name to Queensryche and got to work on their debut EP. But they were still missing a lead singer. So, they hit up Tate, who once again agreed to help. Tate nailed the vocals, but to the dismay of Queensryche he went back to work on other projects.
Fortunately, the record sold really well... somewhere in the ballpark of 60,000 copies. And that burst of success was enough to convince Tate to join the band for good.

Queensryche steadily build up a devoted fanbase throughout the 80s. In ‘84 and ‘86, they released the LPs “The Warning” and “Rage for Order,” both of which have certified Gold. Their third studio album, 1988’s critically acclaimed concept piece “Operation: Mindcrime”, went platinum.
