Amplifier manufacturers often implement rotary encoders in their designs.

They are used to adjust the volume setting and also select different input channels.

In the case of volume encoders they may be smooth or index when rotated hence providing positive feed back to the user.

Input encoders are typically the notch type and come in a variety of designs and styles.

Manufactures also use larger type mechanical switches as an encoder, the video shows an example commonly found in older Denon and Technics Amplifiers.

Customers will often report issues relating to intermittent channel skipping or erratic and poor volume control adjustment.

The problem is due to the original lubrication grease drying out and becoming hard combined with oxidization of the switching contacts.

All Amplifiers that use encoders have a Microcontroller that reads the indexing of the encoder, each index or pulse results in the volume increasing or decreasing, or the input channel changing.

The Amplifier may have a display or simple LED array to show the status change driven by the microcontroller.

The microcontroller also sends a coded signal to the input selection integrated circuits or relay control circuits.

The video shows the tools required, once the encoder has been removed from the circuit board and taken apart the contacts can be cleaned with a fibre glass pencil and Doxit D5.

Note:
As shown in the video some encoders do not have metal contacts.
This type uses a carbon film, so under no circumstances should a fibre glass pencil be used.

Simply wiping the contacts with a lint free cloth and Deoxit will remove the grease and any dirt and restore correct operation.
