In 2005, Director Ridley Scott and Writer William Monahan show that Reynald of Chatillon had captured and killed Saladin’s sister. This is the first time since 1187, that anyone suggested that Reynald had this done. One of the reason may be because they wanted to whitewash Saladin's character by implying that he only attacked the Crusaders as a result of this frightful provocation or may be because they wanted to bump up the action-thriller quotient of the movie in general.

In fact, about a century after 1187, some Christian chroniclers, based in France, wrote that Reynald of Chatillon actually had captured Saladin’s sister (or his aunt) travelling in a caravan. However, none of them suggested that he did her any kind of harm and indeed the best-known of them, the “Oracle's”, specifically stated that after the fall of Jerusalem 1187, She had helped her brother Saladin by bringing twenty camel-loads of rosewater to use in re-purifying the Dome of the Rock.

Saladin's capture of Jeruselam remains a defining moment in the history of the Crusades and the broader struggle for control of the Holy Land. It cemented his reputation as a skilled military commander and elevated him to legendary status in history.
