Not a lot is known about Hugh’s life before he joined General Ashley’s expedition. However, when he joined the fur-trading expedition, Glass was one of the 100 men attacked by the Arikara Indians. In the woods, Glass scared a bear. It charged Glass who killed it with a knife.

Having been heavily wounded, Glass was left behind with fellow explorers John Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger. Fitzgerald dug a grave for Glass and left him there without anything, as he assumed there was no way for Glass to survive. He woke up and started his long 200-mile journey towards Fort Kiowa, crawling on the floor and eating grass.

Once he mended his wounds, Glass forgave Fitzgerald and Bridger. He kept on doing expeditions, until he was 50 when he got killed by the Arikara Indians.
