Lemper (lêmpêr) is a snack made from sticky rice and cooked with coconut milk, filled with minced meat or shredded meat, wrapped in banana leaves like lontong but smaller in size.
Lemper is a typical Javanese snack originating from the Special Region of Yogyakarta which has been documented in Serat Centini which was published in the 18th century.
In general, lemper is a traditional Javanese dish when holding a hajatan procession. However, over time, lemper has now become an everyday snack and is widely sold in the market.

Making lemper includes preparing to mince chicken and cook sticky rice until cooked (can be added with coconut milk). The cooked sticky rice is placed in a mold pan, then the minced chicken is placed on the pan. Next, the sticky rice is wrapped in banana leaves resembling the shape of lontong. The molded lemper is then steamed until cooked. After that, the elongated lemper package is sliced crosswise with the desired thickness so that the minced chicken filling is visible.

In the variation of its manufacture, after the sticky rice is cooked and wrapped with ground chicken, the size is immediately adjusted to the required size and rolled with double-sided plastic wrap, then sealed with a clear partition without going through the steaming process and sold directly. This is done to save time and money.
