What do console EQ curves actually look like?

I’m just as much a fan of mixing with your ears and not your ears, but oftentimes it’s helpful to have another reference point for how your tools work and interact with each other.

Today we’re using Open Sound Meter to look under the hood of an analog console to uncover the actual response of the EQ circuit. It has published specs, but does it actually perform and represent what’s in the manual?

These types of projects not only help you understand EQ better, but also your measurement tools. We often think of measurement as only consisting of a reference microphone in front of a speaker - but you can measure almost anything with a linear and time invariant response!
