GATE 2020 will be organized by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in online mode tentatively on February 1, 2, 8 and 9. GATE 2020 will be conducted in 24 papers including statistics which was introduced in 2019. The entrance exam is a computer-based one held in two sessions per day. Application form of GATE 2020 will be available tentatively from September 1, 2019 while admit card will be released tentatively in December. GATE 2020 scores will be valid for a period of three years from the date of the release of the result which is tentatively March midweek. The GATE 2020 scores will be used for admission purposes in the IITs through the Common Online Admission Portal (COAP) for IITs and CCMT for NITs. Candidates who score equal to or above the qualifying cutoff will be declared as eligible for admissions to M.Tech programmes. The qualifying cutoff for each GATE paper will be different and will be announced in the scorecard by IIT Delhi.

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level post-graduate entrance exam that is jointly conducted by the seven IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore for admission to M.Tech programmes offered by government as well as many private institutes.

The examination will consist of totally 65 questions, segregated as One-mark and Two-mark questions. Out of 65 questions, 10 questions will be from General Aptitude (Verbal and Numerical ability) and 55 questions will be Technical, based on the Paper chosen. The General Aptitude section will have 5 One-mark questions and 5 Two-mark questions, accounting for about 15% of total marks. The Technical section and Engineering Mathematics section will combinedly have 25 One-mark questions and 30 Two-mark questions, accounting for about 85% of total marks. Further, all the sections will have both Multiple Choice Questions or MCQs and Numerical Answer Type questions or NATs. The examination awards negative marks for wrong MCQ answers. Usually, 1/3rd of original marks will be deducted for wrong MCQ answers (i.e. -0.33 for wrong One-mark answers and -0.66 for wrong Two-mark answers) while there are no negative marks for NATs.

GATE Score is normalized score across different sets of question papers. Example, Because of the huge number of students, Mechanical Engineering (ME) is divided into 4-time slots of students each of which gets different sets of questions. Since the difficulty level might vary across slots, the organizing body releases GATE score which can be used to compare and rank students in different time slots.
