Описание к видео Sudhir Kumar Sen: The Forgotten Pioneer Who Brought CYCLING to India!

This video is about the Forgotten Pioneer of India’s Bicycle Revolution — Sudhir Kumar Sen.
When we talk about bicycles, the very first name that comes to most of our minds is Hero Cycles. Founded in 1956 in Ludhiana, Punjab, Hero Cycles became a trusted and household name in the history of Indian bicycles.
But do you know who first introduced the bicycle to India?
Born on 22 February 1888 in Basanda village, Barishal (then in undivided India) to Chandicharan Sen and Bamasundari Dev. No one have imagined that this little boy would one day introduce the bicycle to India. He was the son-in-law of the famous Dr. Nilratan Sircar.
For higher education, he moved from Barishal to Calcutta, where he graduated from Presidency College with Honours in English. The period was marked by the fervor of the Swadeshi Movement that followed the Partition of Bengal, and inspired by this nationalistic wave, Sen turned his attention toward a more sustainable, eco-friendly mode of transport — the bicycle.
A visionary industrialist, Sudhir Kumar Sen realized that no other vehicle was as environmentally friendly or as beneficial for a healthy lifestyle as the bicycle.
In 1909, along with Shri Ramchandra Pandit, he founded “Sen & Pandit Co.” with a modest capital of just ₹400.
He began importing bicycles and spare parts from Europe and selling them in India. According to historian Russell Arnold, by 1910, Sen had imported nearly 35,000 bicycles into India.
In 1917, to educate Indians about the benefits and practicality of bicycles, Sen started publishing a monthly magazine titled “Indian Cycle and Motor Journal.”
His frequent business visits to England helped him connect with Raleigh Company.
In 1952, he established the “Sen-Raleigh Cycle Company” in Kanyapur, Asansol.
The Asansol factory was a modern facility, capable of producing around 200,000 bicycles annually. Most of the employees there were Bengalis. Alongside Raleigh bicycles, Sen also introduced brands like Robin Hood and Humber to India — all of which soon became an integral part of Indian daily life.
For decades, Sen-Raleigh ruled the Indian bicycle market single-handedly.

Then the decline happened. But how? Let’s watch the video.
This video is not about Sabujh Sathi Cycle.
