The Bangalore Palace is located in the Palace Gardens Area of Bangalore and belongs to the Wadiyar dynasty of Mysore. It is built in the Tudor style of architecture with fortified towers, battlements and turrets, and is said to be inspired by the Windsor Castle of Berkshire, England.
In 1884, the then Maharaja of Mysore, Chamarajendra Wadiyar bought the property from Rev. J. Garrett, who was the first Principal of the Central High School in Bangalore, now known as Central College.
The ground floor of the palace has a colorful open courtyard. At the center of it is a fountain and on the edges of the courtyard are beautifully decorated granite benches. Both the fountain and the benches were gifted by the King of Spain.
The Ballroom, also situated in the ground floor, was used to hold private parties of the royals. The walls of the ballroom are adorned with a coat of arms which was gifted to the Wadiyars by the British, while the ceilings have intricate designs reminiscent of the royal era gone by.
The Durbar Hall, on the first floor, led to by a wooden spiral staircase, is known for its decor complete with gothic-style stained glass windows, dainty chandeliers, ornamental mirrors, and Victorian and Edwardian-style furniture, while its walls are covered in shades of yellow and gold. The Maharaja used to hold public meetings here.
The corridors are also beautifully decorated with chandeliers, vases, figurines and collectibles, and furniture used by the royal family.
Another attracting feature of the palace is its collection of old paintings that range from Dutch and Greek pieces to famous Indian artist Raja Ravi Verma.
