Harmonium a keyboard musical instrument, with the wind being supplied by bellows. Although it originated in the west, the harmonium has occupied a permanent place among Bengali musical instruments since the late nineteenth century. A Frenchman, Alexander Dorian, is credited with its invention in 1840. It is also known as 'Cabinet Organ'.

The pump organ, reed organ, harmonium, or melodeon is a type of free-reed organ that generates sound as air flows past a vibrating piece of thin metal in a frame. The piece of metal is called a reed.

হারমোনিয়াম বিদেশী বাদ্যযন্ত্র। এর উদ্ভব পাশ্চাত্যে হলেও কালক্রমে যন্ত্রটি প্রাচ্যের যন্ত্রতালিকায় বিশেষ স্থান করে নেয়। ১৮৪২ সালে প্যারিসের আলেকজান্ডার ডোরিয়ান এটি আবিষ্কার করেন বলে জানা যায়। এ বাদ্যযন্ত্রটি ‘ক্যাবিনেট অর্গ্যান’ নামেও পরিচিত।

হারমোনিয়াম দেখতে একটি বাক্সের মতো। বেলোর সাহায্যে ভেতরে বায়ু চালিয়ে যন্ত্রটি বাজাতে হয়। এতে একটি রিডবোর্ড থাকে এবং ধাতব রিডগুলি বোর্ডে সপ্তকের অন্তর্গত স্বরস্থান অনুযায়ী ক্রমোচ্চ পদ্ধতিতে সাজানো থাকে। বেলোর সাহায্যে চালিত বায়ু ভেতরে গিয়ে রিডে আঘাত করে এবং তা থেকে ধ্বনি সৃষ্টি হয়। রিডগুলির উপরে থাকে সাদা ও কালো রঙের পর্দা। সাদা পর্দাগুলি সাধারণত শুদ্ধ স্বর এবং কালোগুলি কোমল স্বর বোঝায়। তবে স্কেল পরিবর্তনের ক্ষেত্রে এ কথা প্রযোজ্য নয়।
