I used to sit around and capture subpar images with my wide-angle lens on blue-sky days...

One of my biggest realizations as a photographer was that my viewers could only see what I was showing them. It sounds obvious, but many of us take the boring blue sky image when conditions aren't quite what we hoped for.

In my opinion, the best photographers are the ones who react to what the landscape gives them. When the clouds and light are perfect, look to your wide angle. But when the skies are clear, and you have harsh, direct sunlight, look to the telephoto lens to create abstract images with your telephoto lens.

Remember, your viewers can only see what you show them. Many of the telephoto images in my portfolio were shot under harsh lighting conditions and boring blue skies, but you wouldn't know that by looking at the image.

I totally understand wanting to capture the wide-angle scene, especially if it's your only visit to a location. But if you care about capturing portfolio-quality images, consider picking up a telephoto lens and look for the finer details in the grand scene.
