There was a picturesque island in the middle of the ocean. There lived a noble and good-natured businessman. He had many children. The children were also good-natured and the businessman loved them all.

They used to have dinner together. There lived a crow that used to feed on the left-behinds after every meal. It was hale and salubrious. But this crow had a feeling that it was the only one to have such sumptuous food. The arrogant crow used to insult other fellow crows and other birds even.

Once, a bevy of swans came flying to that area. The crow was jealous of these swans. The businessman's children also spoke up. "Hey Crow, you've grown fat and lazy. We don't think you can fly as fast or as far as those beautiful swans."

The crow relented. It called one of the swans and challenged it to a race.The Swan confidently agreed. "I know a lot of styles of flying. There's no one that I can think of who can defeat me in flight. I'm going to easily defeat you." -was the crow's snide.

Both of them started to fly toward the ocean. The Swan was majestic in its flight. It beat its wings steadily and was making firm progress. The crow however was impressive in its differ- ent styles. It would fly fast, make a vertical ascend and plunge alarmingly to the surface of the ocean. It was flying extremely fast and was confident of easily beating the steady swan. The crow looked to be winning at least in this initial phase of the race.

The sun was beating down harshly on the birds. Not used to long flights, the crow started to feel tired. Its acceleration reduced, speed was sporadic and it slowed down to a complete stop. It was looking around for some solid ground to land. Being in the middle of the ocean, it couldn't find any. Unable to carry on any longer, the crow fell in the water.

The swan that was flying majestically was not surprised. It came around to the crow and taunted "Oh mighty crow, what flying style is this? I'm totally unaware. Why don't you please teach me this style of flying?" Reality dawned on the crow. Its ego shattered, the crow became humble and spoke softly "Oh noble swan, please help me. Save my life. I have realized my stupidity." The swan advised the crow not to repeat this mis- take ever again and swooped down, picking the crow in one smooth motion and bringing it back to land.

The crows, swans and all others that had assembled there had a good laugh and opined that the crow had learnt its lesson.

A crow will always remain a crow and can never compete with a swan. One should know one's strengths and limitations. Never insult anyone. Stupidity combined with arrogance and a huge ego will not get you ahead in life.
