On this day in 1982, Prince Andrew spoke of his experiences as a Sea King pilot in the South Atlantic during the Falklands War.

During the interview, His Royal Highness revealed he had spoken to his mother the Queen via telephone from one of the ships at the Navy HQ in the Falkland Islands. He observed that the line with Buckingham Palace was “clearer than it is from London to Edinburgh.”

Her Majesty granted the Duke of York permission to “step back from public duties for the foreseeable future” in 2019.
