DIY SHEEP HUNT - Stuck N The Rut 198

“Adam and I have been planning on a dall sheep hunt for a long time. With one failed attempt at sheep hunting a couple years back, I knew if I ever got a chance to harvested a dall sheep in the future, it would be a special day.

We spotted at band of 5 rams the night before with 2 potential legal rams from miles away. We knew we needed to get a closer look. We got up early and hiked up a creek bottom to stay hid. My idea was to be on top and glassing down while Adam wanted to spot the sheep from the bottom first before ascending the mountain. We both agreed it wasn’t worth the risk of jumping them so we went to the top. As we took our backpacks off and crept over the edge to hopefully see the group of rams less than 400yrds. There was no sheep to be found. Adam then spotted the rams on the opposite side of the mountain down by the creek bottom. I should have gone with Adams idea, lol. Now they were up feeding and we thought we could cut them off. We made it in range in 1/2 hour again to see no sheep. We knew they only had so many basins to hide in so we ascended a second time to the top of that mountain range. We searched all day walking the ridge line peeking over basin after basin. After miles of hiking, we finally found 5 fresh sheep beds from earlier in the day we knew we were close but still couldn’t turn them up. We came off the ridge line walking back to camp and I looked back just below where we had just walked and there was the 5 rams at 460 yards beaded just below sky line out of sight from the top. I dropped down leveled up the 300 prc from Gunwerks with the new Elevate bipod. Had to wait for the rams to get some distance between them for a safe shot and as soon as the lead and legal ram stood alone, I placed a fatal shot to the vitals. It truly is and was a special day I’ll never forget.”
