Investing in Flavour, Family and the Future of Gloucester: Meet The Wafflers
“Why Gloucester? Because it’s time we invested in it.”
– Nabeel, Founder of The Wafflers
At a time when many high streets are searching for renewal, one local entrepreneur is bringing something fresh, fun, and full of flavour to the heart of Gloucester.
As part of our ongoing spotlight on local enterprise, Invest in Gloucester sat down with Nabeel, founder of The Wafflers, a vibrant dessert franchise that has just opened its newest branch at 83 Northgate Street.
Though the name may sound playful, the vision behind The Wafflers is serious about business and serious about Gloucester.
From Whim to Waffle
Nabeel’s journey to entrepreneurship was rooted in both instinct and upbringing.
“Honestly, it began on a bit of a whim,” he admits. “I studied business management and grew up around catering. My parents have always been in the food industry. But I noticed that here in the South West, especially in places like Gloucester, there’s a lack of high-quality, creative dessert options. That’s the gap we wanted to fill.”
With a sharp eye for market opportunity and a passion for food, he saw the chance to introduce something new to the city, something that felt more at home in London or Manchester than the South West.
A Concept That Stands Out
What sets The Wafflers apart? For Nabeel, it’s about innovation, experience, and personality.
“Most places offer the same generic menus,” he says. “Wafflers brings something more distinctive, a menu you’d typically expect in the bigger cities. The name itself is a double play. Yes, we serve waffles, but we also like to keep things light and fun. I talk a lot, I waffle and people remember that.”
The quirky brand identity, combined with a commitment to quality, has struck a chord with customers seeking more than the ordinary.
Family Roots, Local Growth
The Wafflers concept actually began outside Gloucester, in Rugby, where Nabeel’s cousins Zenat Shaikh and another family member launched the original branch.
“The response there was fantastic,” Nabeel shares. “It quickly became clear there was an appetite for something fresh, so bringing it to Gloucester felt like a natural next step. It’s very much a family-driven business, rooted in passion and community.”
A Warm Welcome in Gloucester
Since opening, the feedback from local residents and visitors has been overwhelmingly positive.
“There’s real demand here,” Nabeel says. “We just needed to bring something new and market it the right way. Gloucester deserves more variety. More competition helps raise standards and gives people real value.”
The Wafflers team is not only serving desserts. They’re helping energise Gloucester’s food scene, encouraging other entrepreneurs to see the city’s potential.
A Message to Fellow Entrepreneurs
“Gloucester is ready,” says Nabeel. “The market is here, the people are here, and the opportunity is real. For anyone thinking about starting something, don’t overlook this city.”
And for everyone else? “Stay happy, stay smiling, and come visit The Wafflers. Whether it’s for a sweet treat or just a good waffle with friends, we’d love to welcome you.”
