The spine is made of stacked vertebrae, separated by discs that act as cushions. Each disc has a tough outer layer (annulus) and a soft inner part (nucleus). A bulging disc happens when the nucleus pushes outward against the annulus, similar to ice cream bulging from a sandwich cookie. This pressure can compress nearby nerves and tissues, causing discomfort.

Bulging discs can appear anywhere in the spine, though they’re more common in the lumbar (lower back). However, they can also occur in the neck due to misalignments. Some people have bulging discs without any symptoms, but when symptoms do appear, they may include neck pain, shoulder pain, radiating arm pain, numbness or tingling in the hands, and reduced range of motion.

The most common cause is spinal misalignment. When the spine isn’t properly aligned, pressure may push the disc out of place. Restoring proper cervical alignment can help relieve symptoms and reduce disc bulging.

Non-surgical treatments include physical therapy, chiropractic care, hot/cold therapy, and lifestyle adjustments. In some cases, medications may be used to manage pain. However, addressing the root cause—often alignment—is essential for long-term relief.

Degeneration can also cause bulging discs. As the spine wears down, uneven pressure can lead to bulging. Maintaining disc health is key. This includes staying active, having good posture, lifting properly, maintaining a healthy weight, and staying hydrated.

A spine-friendly lifestyle helps prevent issues and supports long-term spinal health. If you're at risk, regular evaluation and mindful movement can make a big difference.
