In the summer, Crane Lake is the southern gateway for adventurers to explore Voyageurs National Park via skiff, houseboat, and canoe. When the water freezes over (six feet thick in some places), boating gives way to sledding, and canoeing to cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Casting and trolling the open lake turn into jigging and drinking over the ice holes. The bugs give way to bitter cold. Temperatures drop below negative thirty fahrenheit and an already sparsely populated stretch of wilderness becomes all the more desolate. It's a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the serenity, often under still-blue skies.

Just a few miles from Canada, Crane connects directly to Sand Point Lake and Namakan Lake - both of which are divided in half by the international border - as well as Lake Kabetogama. From this chain, Quetico Provincial Park (Northwest Ontario) and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (Superior National Forest) are also accessible. Most of the frozen months see traffic explore the vast trail system in the name of a joyride, where a rip from Atikokan or the communities of Lake Superior take only a few hours.
