Our hotel in Kyoto was in the Central area--Higashiyama. I picked this one because it was central, had a really pretty atrium in the center area, and sounded from its reviews to be very quiet and clean. We stayed there from a Monday evening through Friday morning and had a very relaxing time. We could have walked to quite a few places for the restaurants, markets, and temples, but we took taxis most of the time. They were very convenient, relatively inexpensive, were right outside the front entrance of the hotel, and gave us extra time to see the local life and rest for our next adventure as we rode as passengers. We each had a massage at the spa in the hotel, and they were incredible!!
