Patients can be diagnosed with a reversal of a cervical lordosis after receiving the results of an X-ray or MRI scan. To understand this diagnosis, we must also understand what a cervical lordosis is.

The spine has normal curves. These normal curves make our spine stronger to gravitational forces and make it flexible at the same time. These curves also allow the distribution of mechanical stress/forces evenly everywhere in the spine.

There are many types of curves that exist in our spine, and depending on the location and functionality, these can be normal or abnormal. If the curve is on the neck, that is the cervical spine. If it is on the thoracic area, that means the curve is on the mid-back, and if the curve is lumbar, we know this is the low-back area.

Lordosis is a curve that bends forward. It is normal to see one in the neck and low back. Kyphosis is a curve that bends backward, and it is normal to have it in the thoracic spine or mid-back.

When thinking of cervical lordosis, we know the normal range is from 30 to 40 degrees; similar to blood pressure, we know a normal range is found in this area. There could be patients that too have much of this lordosis, and we call that hyperlordosis, and when it falls below this range, it is called hypolordosis.

Now a reversal of cervical lordosis is when it bends too much in the opposite direction, and the spine becomes kyphotic. A reversal of the cervical spine can also be called a kyphosis of the cervical spine or cervical kyphosis.

This is a problem because the normal function of the cervical spine helps support the head, protects the nerves that go through this section of the spine, and more. When it is kyphotic, it can produce neck pain; it could affect the nerves that exit at this point of the spine, affect organs connected to these nerves, and lead to malfunctioning of these organs. It could also lead to degenerative changes in the spine. All of this affects the bones in the spine as well, causing disc problems such as disc degeneration, asymmetrical movement, headaches, and other neck issues like pain.

The loss of cervical lordosis will lead to many issues and symptoms beyond just neck pain. That is why it should be taken seriously before its effects pile on over a long period of time.

If you have a loss of cervical lordosis or a reversal of lordosis, don't allow it to worsen and become harder to correct. Start by treating the underlying cause and restoring the normal curve of the spine. This will increase the possibility of eliminating symptoms and other ramifications of the loss of lordosis you might be experiencing.
