Thousands gather outside New Zealand Parliament protesting against bill endangering Maori rights

Ten thousands of New Zealanders assembled outside parliament, marking one of the largest protests in the nation’s history. 9-day march by Maori and supporters across New Zealand ended in a massive rally in Wellington on Nov19, drawing over 15,000 protesters. Demonstrators opposed a bill that reinterprets the Treaty of Waitangi, which governs Maori-British Crown relations since 1840. Many Protesters joined the mega rally in traditional attire carrying Maori weapons, flags and placards reading ‘Honour the Treaty’ and ‘For children’.Protestors emphasized the need to protect cultural identity and expressed fears that the bill would divide the nation. New Zealand PM Christopher Luxon reaffirmed his party’s opposition to the bill, ensuring it will not pass beyond the second reading.
