She was famous for being banished by Queen Elizabeth I for Stealing the Queen’s Lover, Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester. Although the Queen would not have married Leicester, she did not want her niece to marry her lover and banished her from her court. Queen Elizabeth also executed Lettice’s oldest son, Robert Devereux, who was the Earl of Essex and became the favourite of Queen Elizabeth in later life. However, he fell out with the Queen and started a failed rebellion. Elizabeth executed Robert Devereux and Lettice’s third husband, Sir Christopher Blount. Lettice Knollys (1543-1634), Queen Elizabeth’s favourite niece whom she banished for marrying Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester
Lettice Knollys was the granddaughter of Mary Boleyn, daughter of Catherine Carey, and the nieces of Queen Elizabeth I. She lived in Elizabeth’s household when she was young.
The Spanish ambassador, Diego Guzmán de Silva, described her as “one of the best-looking ladies of the court” and a Queen’s favourite. She also resembled a younger and beautiful Queen Elizabeth I.
In 1560, she married Walter Devereux at 17; Queen Elizabeth made Devereux the Earl of Essex and Devereux spent most of his time anglicizing Ireland and died there in 1578.
When Lettice’s husband was in Ireland, she fell in love with Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester, the lover and favourite courtier of Queen Elizabeth I. Lettice married Leicester secretly in 1578.
Queen Elizabeth flew into a jealous rage and banished her traitorous niece from her court as soon as she found out about the secret marriage in 1579.
Their mutual hatred worsened after Queen Elizabeth I executed Lettice’s oldest son, Robert Devereux and her third husband, Sir Christopher Blount, in 1601, after Devereux started a failed rebellion.
